Matter and Form V2 3D Scanner
3D scanning creates 3D models of real-world objects. Our 3D scanner takes multiple snapshots of an object using lasers. These shots are then merged into a 3D model. You can mesh the point cloud and export your model to a .stl file for 3D printing, export a .xyz file for CAD modeling programs, export a .gltf file for use in digital display, and more! If you have not used the 3D scanner before, please use the form below to request a one-on-one appointment with our staff.
The Matter and Form scanner can scan items that weigh less than 6.5 pounds and are up to 25 cm tall and 18 cm in diameter. There are some materials that laser scanners have trouble scanning. Because the scanner works by capturing the data that is made by the laser hitting the surface of the object, any material that makes the lasers difficult to see will not scan well. This includes objects with shiny surfaces (metal, jewels, mirrors, etc.), clear or translucent objects (glass, clear plastic, etc.), dark objects that absorb too much light (black velvet, fur, etc.).
Scanning spray, paint (washable or not), or other powder (foot spray, dry shampoo, deodorant powder sprays, talcum powder) may be used improve an object’s suitability for scanning. Makerspace users are responsible for using/bringing their own supplies and for cleaning any and all particulates.
