Book Discussion for One Maryland One Book: There There
Join us for a thoughtful virtual discussion of the 2023 One Maryland One Book Selection, "There There" by Tommy Orange.
A description of the book provided by the publisher reads, "Jacquie Red Feather is newly sober and trying to make it back to the family she left behind in shame in Oakland. Dene Oxedrene is pulling his life together after his uncle's death and has come to work the powwow and to honor his uncle's memory. Edwin Frank has come to find his true father. Bobby Big Medicine has come to drum the Grand Entry. Opal Viola Victoria Bear Shield has come to watch her nephew Orvil Red Feather; Orvil has taught himself Indian dance through YouTube videos, and he has come to the Big Oakland Powwow to dance in public for the very first time. Tony Loneman is a young Native American boy whose future seems destined to be as bleak as his past, and he has come to the Powwow with darker intentions--intentions that will destroy the lives of everyone in his path."

When Lila Macapagal moves back home, her life seems to be turning into a rom-com. She is tasked with saving her Tita Rosie’s restaurant, while dealing with a group of matchmaking aunties. However, her life quickly swerves from a Nora Ephron romp to an Agatha Christie case when a food critic (who happens to be an ex-boyfriend) drops dead after an argument with Lila. Lila is left with no choice but to conduct her own investigation when everyone decides that she’s the killer. Armed with the nosy auntie network, her barista best bud, and her trusted Dachsund, Longanisa, Lila takes on this tasty, twisted case and soon finds her own neck on the chopping block…

Changing Landscapes: Early Native & Colonial Relations: A One Maryland One Book Program
In partnership with Historic St. Mary's City, Peter Friesen, Director of Education, will be presenting on St. Mary's Fort & various archaeological sites representing 8,000 years of Native presence.
With the discovery of St. Mary’s Fort, HSMC decided to examine the state's early past in a new way, placing emphasis on the archaeological study of both the generations of Native peoples who developed complex societies while living in the region and the European colonists whose arrival disrupted life in what is now called Maryland, forever altering the trajectory of our state's history. This lecture will discuss how these two groups interacted with each other over the course of the 1600s.
This year's One Maryland One Book selection, There There by Tommy Orange, focuses on the lives and stories of twelve Native people in modern-day California. In contrast, this presentation will focus on our own local history and the archaeological studies being carried out to learn about the lives of those people that called this area home prior to and during the 17th century.
About Historic St. Mary City (HSMC)
HSMC is responsible for the preservation of more than 800 acres of land and three miles of shoreline. The museum continues to make new archaeological discoveries and train future archaeologists with its annual Field School in Historical Archaeology, the longest-running historical archaeological field school in the country. HSMC continues to engage both students and the general public in educational programs in novel and exciting ways, encouraging people of all ages to connect the past with their contemporary lives.

The Discovery Of St. Mary's Fort With Travis Parno
Join Travis Parno with a presentation on St. Mary's Fort, registration is required.
In the spring of 1634, approximately 150 European colonizers arrived on the shores of what is today the St. Mary's River and gave the land they claimed the name "Maryland." Within days, they began construction of St. Mary's Fort, a wooden fortification that would be their home for the next eight years. The archaeological remains of St. Mary's Fort lay hidden until recently. In this presentation, Travis Parno, Acting Executive Director of Historic St. Mary's City, shares the story of the rediscovery of St. Mary's Fort, highlighting the latest finds from the dig site. Artifacts recovered from the excavations will be available for viewing.

If you're an experienced native gardener, please spread the joy by bringing your favorite plants and seeds to swap and share.
Strange as it sounds, we're trying to prevent the spread of invasive jumping worms, so please follow these simple steps when bringing your plants to the event:
- Dig up your plants.
- Shake the dirt off the roots.
- Gently rinse the roots clean.

Making Bricks in Colonial and Early Republic Maryland
Dr. James Gibb will present on the topic of historical brickmaking, with a special focus on what bricks can tell us about Maryland history.
Occasional loads of brick were imported into Colonial Maryland, but most were made locally, often on the building sites for which they were intended. This illustrated presentation describes preindustrial brickmaking, the products recovered archaeologically, and the kinds of information we can glean about the past from these seemingly banal, but varied building blocks of Maryland history.
