The Grim Readers: Book Club
The Grim Readers is a book club that meets on the first Tuesday of every month for an hour to discuss a horror book. This month's pick is Congo by Michael Crichton.
In the African rain forest, near the ruins of the Lost City of Zinj, an expedition of American geologists is inexplicably and viciously killed in a matter of minutes.
Thousands of miles away, Karen Ross, the Congo Project Supervisor, observes a horrific video transmission of the aftermath: a camp demolished, tents crumpled and torn, equipment strewn in the mud together with dead bodies — all motionless apart from for one moving image — a shadowy, man-shaped distortion.
In San Francisco, primatologist Peter Elliot works with a gorilla named Amy, who has an astonishing vocabulary of 620 “signs.” Lately, her behavior has been unpredictable and her drawings match, with striking precision, the pages of a Portuguese print dating back to 1642 — a sketch of an ancient lost city. A different expedition team, along with Amy the gorilla, is led into the Congo, where they travel into a lost world to discover what really happened.

Veterans Book Group
A book discussion series for veterans led by Vietnam veteran Wayne Karlin. Registration required; space is limited. For more information contact Kimberlé Fields at 301-863-8188 or kfields@stmalib.org.
This book discussion series is tailored for veterans and their families. We are privileged that is led by Vietnam veteran, author, and College of Southern Maryland professor Wayne Karlin. Service members of all eras, their spouses, and adult children are welcome.
This year we will read and discuss four non-fiction books: a former infantryman exploring how to be a parent; a former Navy pilot struggling with the tug between pride and guilt about his service; a journalist discussing in detail the erosion of honor in an elite force; and a former nurse’s very personal memoir of loss and trauma from World War I. Each book is written in a very different style but connected by themes of war, courage, honor, and trauma.
Meetings will be held the first Saturday of the month 10 am - 12 pm via ZOOM. Participants should plan to attend all sessions. Materials provided. Book descriptions are from Amazon
The Veterans Book Group is coordinated statewide by Maryland Humanities and is presented locally in partnership with St. Mary’s County Library. It is supported in part by Lockheed Martin, David Bruce Smith, and the Wawa Foundation.
June 4th: Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain
Wayne’s note: I think this is one of the most devastating accounts of World War One. It is told not by a soldier but by a woman from a sheltered background who volunteered as a nurse and suffered the severe losses that marked her generation.
In 1914, Vera Brittain was 20; when war was declared she was preparing to study at Oxford. Four years later, her life - and the life of her whole generation - had changed in a way that would have been unimaginable in the tranquil pre-war era.
Testament of Youth, one of the most famous autobiographies of the First World War, is Brittain's account of how she survived those agonizing years. Brittan recounts how she lost the man she loved; how she nursed the wounded and how she emerged into an altered world. A passionate record of a lost generation. It made Vera Brittain one of the best-loved writers of her time. This book has lost none of its power to shock, move, and enthrall readers since its first publication in 1933.

All Books Considered: Nimona
Join Conor, a librarian at Leonardtown, as we discuss "Nimona" by Noelle Stevenson virtually for the Staff Picks Book Club!
Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are. Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in the brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from ND Stevenson, based on their award-winning webcomic. Nimona has won several awards since its publication in 2015 and was a finalist for the National Book award. Grappling with themes of predestination, loss, betrayal, and corruption, Nimona is a fantastic story for graphic novel fans! Come discuss virtually with us on March 28 at 7 p.m.!
We hope to see you there!

Pig Manure & Swizzle Sticks: 20th C. Baltimore and Washington Garbage on Southern MD Farm
Dr. James Gibb will describe the archaeological search for and discovery of garbage on a Southern Maryland farm.
Archaeological investigations throughout the five southern Maryland counties frequently encounter concentrations of trash dating from the 1930s through the 1950s. Everything from restaurant plates to swizzle sticks to billiard balls appears on farms unlikely to have used any of those items. This illustrated presentation follows the trails of urban garbage to rural farms, reflecting on the role of that material in food production and the making of cosmetics and explosives.
